Description

This object is a beautifully structured spiral galaxy located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +1 degree.  It is a magnitude 11.5 galaxy which spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 90,000 light years. From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about 25 degrees from edge-on.

The bright core is surrounded by an equally bright nuclear ring.  The fragmented arms are hard to trace, spiraling out from the center for 360 degrees.  Hints of several VV rows can be seen in the arms. Numerous blue star clouds and HII regions are visible in the outer disk.

The bright 6.7 magnitude star HD 145204 lies just above the FOV of this image, which created a few issues in the processing.

An interesting distant cluster of galaxies is seen in the upper left of the image.

This is the second image of this galaxy on Astrobin.
